Educational Qualification Requirements

For IMA and OTA

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.

For INA

  • B.Tech degree or BE in relevant engineering fields.
  • For Naval Academy: Bachelor’s degree with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level.

For AFA

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level.

Selection Process Details

The selection process for CDS examination consists of two stages:

  1. Stage I: Written Examination

    • English (100 marks)
    • General Knowledge (100 marks)
    • Elementary Mathematics (100 marks) – For IMA, INA and AFA only
    • Total: 300 marks (For IMA, INA and AFA), 200 marks (For OTA)
  2. Stage II: SSB Interview

    • Intelligence and Personality Test (SSB Interview)
    • Consists of two stages – Stage I (Officer Intelligence Rating tests) and Stage II (Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, Conference)
    • Total: 200 marks

Final Selection Criteria

The final merit list is prepared based on the combined performance in both the written examination and the SSB Interview. The weightage given is:

  • Written Exam: 300 marks (200 marks for OTA)
  • SSB Interview: 200 marks

Candidates must obtain the minimum qualifying marks as determined by the Commission in both stages to be considered for the final selection.

Medical Standards

For IMA, INA and AFA

Training Period and Stipend

Career Prospects After Training

Candidates who successfully complete their training will be commissioned as:

  • IMA: Lieutenant in Indian Army
  • INA: Sub-Lieutenant in Indian Navy
  • AFA: Flying Officer in Indian Air Force
  • OTA: Lieutenant in Indian Army (Short Service Commission)

The officers will receive pay as per the 7th CPC in Level 10 of the pay matrix (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500) along with Military Service Pay, Dearness Allowance, Kit Maintenance Allowance, Transport Allowance, and other allowances based on the place of posting.

Q1. Is there a waiting list for CDS final selection?

Yes, UPSC maintains a reserve list which may be used to fill vacancies in case selected candidates do not join or withdraw.

Q2. What happens if I’m medically unfit in one service but fit for others?

Candidates who are unfit for one service may still be considered for other services if they meet the medical standards for those services.

Q3. Can I apply again if I’m not selected in this attempt?

Yes, candidates can apply for subsequent CDS examinations as long as they meet the age criteria and have not exhausted their permissible attempts.

Q4. What is the procedure after final selection?

Selected candidates will receive joining instructions from respective academies. They need to report to the assigned academy on the specified date with all required documents.
